WP Courseware work we take on
Most WP Courseware projects touch three layers at once: how the course is structured, how learners are assessed, and what sells access. We work on all three together so a change in one doesn’t quietly break another.
Course builder setup and restructuring
We map your program into WP Courseware’s course, module and unit hierarchy, set prerequisites between courses, and use the duplicate tools to spin up a new cohort without rebuilding a single unit.
Quizzes that grade the way you teach
Blocking quizzes with pass marks, non-blocking quizzes with a recommended score, surveys, question pools with random selection, timers and attempt limits. We add tag-based feedback so a failed attempt tells the learner what to review.
Drip, expiry and preview rules
Release units by enrollment date or calendar date, set course expiration with a progress reset for yearly recertification, and turn on unit teasers so visitors can sample a lesson before they pay.
Built-in cart with Stripe and PayPal
We configure WP Courseware’s own checkout for one-time payments, subscriptions, installment plans and course bundles, then run every path in sandbox mode before a real card goes through.
Membership and store integrations
Link courses to MemberPress, Paid Memberships Pro, Restrict Content Pro, WishList Member, WooCommerce or Easy Digital Downloads, so buying a level enrolls the student in the right courses and a cancellation removes access.
Unit templates and course layout
Custom unit templates in your child theme, a restyled Course Progress Outline and Mark as Completed button, the WP Courseware blocks placed on sales pages, and landing pages designed in Elementor or Divi.
Certificates, gradebook and reports
Branded PDF certificates, a manual grading routine for open-ended and file upload answers, and gradebook CSV exports shaped for HR or accreditation. Where the built-in reports stop, we build a custom dashboard.
Custom add-ons and automation
Companion plugins that react to enrollment and completion, Uncanny Automator or OttoKit recipes, ConvertKit and Mailchimp tagging, GamiPress or myCRED points, and GrassBlade for xAPI content.

Why course owners bring their WP Courseware site to us
We read the setup before touching it
Every project opens with an audit of your courses, quiz settings, integrations and theme overrides, so the fix lands where the fault actually is.
Staging first, every time
Changes go to a staging copy that holds your real courses. Nothing reaches the live site until you have clicked through it yourself.
Update-safe custom code
We write custom features as separate plugins on WordPress hooks instead of editing WP Courseware core files, so a plugin update won’t erase them.
A named project manager
One person owns your timeline, answers on Slack or email, and sends milestone reports you can forward to whoever signs off the budget.
A written price after a free call
We scope first and price second. If the result doesn’t meet what we agreed, our zero billing guarantee means you don’t pay for it.
Straight talk on fit
If WP Courseware is the wrong tool for a requirement, such as proctored exams or single sign-on across many departments, you hear it from us before you spend money on it.
From first call to launch
Free consultation
A call about what you sell, who is learning and what is failing today. You leave with an honest first read on scope.
Audit and quote
With an NDA in place, we review the site and send a written scope, timeline and price.
Build on staging
Development happens on a copy of your site, with a weekly check-in and a running list of finished items.
Test the student path
We enroll test users, buy through every payment option, pass and fail the quizzes, and confirm certificates and emails go out.
Launch and handover
We deploy, watch the first real enrollments, and hand over the code, access details and notes on everything we changed.
Work we are asked to do
Coach moving off a hosted course platform
The course library is rebuilt as WP Courseware modules and units, students are imported with their accounts, and the flagship program sells through Stripe with a three-payment installment plan.
Association with yearly continuing education
Each course expires after twelve months and resets progress, the final exam is a blocking quiz with a pass mark, and the certificate prints the credit hours members need for their records.
Membership site running on MemberPress
Every membership level maps to its own bundle of courses, renewals no longer drop students out of their units, and members see a custom unit template with downloads beside each video.
Internal training team
Department leads get the Instructor role for their own courses, results export from the gradebook to CSV for compliance files, and a Slack message goes out when someone finishes a required course.
Tools and integrations
What WP Courseware does well, and where it needs a developer
WP Courseware, from Fly Plugins, is one of the older WordPress LMS plugins and it shows in a good way. The drag-and-drop course builder is quick to learn, the course, module and unit structure fits how most instructors already plan, and the plugin brings its own checkout, so a small course business can take payments without adding a store plugin.
Where owners call us is the layer between “installed” and “running a business on it.” The quiz settings have real depth (blocking and non-blocking quizzes, question pools, random selection, timers, attempt limits, seven question types including sorting, matrix sorting and fill-in-the-blank), and a pass mark set too high on a blocking quiz can stall a whole cohort. Drip rules, prerequisites and course expiration interact with each other. The membership integrations work well once the mapping between levels and courses is right, and cause support tickets when it isn’t.
Getting the sales side right
You have three realistic ways to sell WP Courseware courses. The built-in cart handles PayPal and Stripe with one-time prices, subscriptions, installments and bundles. WooCommerce makes sense when you already run a store or need its tax and gateway options. A membership plugin such as MemberPress, Paid Memberships Pro, Restrict Content Pro or WishList Member fits when access to courses is one benefit of a wider membership.
We pick one with you, set it up, and then test the unhappy paths as carefully as the happy ones: a failed installment, a refund, a cancelled membership, a student who buys the same course twice. Those are the cases that create support email later.
Custom development that survives updates
WP Courseware exposes shortcodes, Gutenberg blocks, custom unit templates and WordPress hooks, which gives us clean places to extend it. When you need something the plugin doesn’t ship with, we write it as a companion plugin. Typical requests we quote:
- A manager dashboard that shows completion and gradebook scores by department
- Enrollment triggered by a CRM tag or a form submission, through Uncanny Automator or custom code
- Extra fields on the PDF certificate, such as license number or credit hours
- Video moved to Vimeo, Wistia or S3 Media Maestro so unit pages load faster
Because none of this lives inside the WP Courseware folder, you keep receiving Fly Plugins updates without losing work you paid for.
Fixing a site someone else built
A lot of our WP Courseware work starts with a site that mostly works. Students report that Mark as Completed does nothing, the course outline shows the wrong progress to logged-in users, certificates come out blank, or the site slows down every time a cohort starts. We reproduce the problem on staging, find the cause (often a caching rule, a theme template or a conflicting plugin), fix it, and write down what we changed so the next person doesn’t have to guess.
When WP Courseware is no longer the right fit
For most course businesses WP Courseware is plenty. If you later need things like proctored exams, SSO with user provisioning or audit-ready compliance records across a large organization, we’ll say so plainly and plan a move to a platform built for that, which can include our own LMS Advisor. Until then, our job is to make the site you have work properly.
