Custom LMS work we take on

Most custom projects extend a proven LMS plugin. Some need a purpose-built plugin from the database up. We scope both and show you the trade-off in writing.

Build-versus-buy assessment

We map your requirements against LearnDash, LifterLMS, Tutor LMS and others, list what each covers out of the box, and price the gap before you commit to anything.

Custom LMS plugin from scratch

Custom post types or dedicated tables for programs, cohorts, attempts and credits, written to WordPress coding standards with WP-CLI commands and automated tests.

Extensions for existing LMS plugins

Add-ons that hook into LearnDash, LifterLMS or Tutor LMS for what they lack, such as manager approval steps, custom completion rules or credit-hour tracking.

Custom reporting and dashboards

Manager and admin dashboards built around the questions you actually ask, with CSV and PDF exports, scheduled email reports and filters by team, site or cohort.

Enrollment, pricing and access logic

Seat-based company purchases, approval workflows, bundles, course sequences and access that ends on a set date, wired into WooCommerce or your own billing system.

SCORM and xAPI tracking

SCORM and xAPI content tracked through tools such as GrassBlade xAPI Companion, or a direct connection to your LRS when auditors want statement-level records.

Enterprise integrations

HR systems, HubSpot, Salesforce, SSO providers and webhooks, run as background jobs with Action Scheduler so a slow third-party API never blocks a learner.

Block editor and learner UI

Custom Gutenberg blocks and React screens for catalogs, progress views and assessments, styled to your brand and usable with a keyboard.

Why LMS Advisor

Why teams trust us with a custom LMS build

We say when not to build

If a plugin plus a small add-on covers your needs, we recommend that and save you the custom budget.

Code another team can maintain

Git history, coding standards, inline documentation and a handover guide mean a future developer can pick it up without us.

A data model designed for reporting

We plan tables and indexes for the reports you will need later, which is exactly where most homegrown LMS plugins fall over.

Security reviewed before release

Nonces, capability checks, prepared queries and output escaping are checked on every form and endpoint.

Ownership and confidentiality

The plugin is yours outright with no license strings, and the project is covered by an NDA.

Delivery you can hold us to

Milestones with on-time delivery guaranteed, and our zero billing guarantee if the result falls short of the agreed scope.

How we work

From first call to launch

Discovery call

A free conversation about your programs, learners, pricing and the tools you use today.

Requirements and options report

A written list of must-have rules, what current plugins cover, and two priced options: extend a plugin or build custom.

Data model and prototype

We agree the database design and click through a prototype of the key learner and admin screens before full development starts.

Build in milestones

Development on staging, a demo at each milestone and your feedback folded into the next stage.

Migration and handover

Existing users and records are imported, the system goes live, and you receive documentation plus an optional support plan.

Typical projects

Work we are asked to do

Continuing education credits

A provider must track credits per course, per state license and per renewal period, and print the right figures on each certificate. A custom extension on top of an LMS plugin handles the credit logic.

Franchise training network

Head office publishes courses, each location manager assigns them to staff, and regional leads see completion by store. Plugin group features cover part of this, custom roles and reports cover the rest.

Seats sold to companies

A training firm sells blocks of seats to employers, who then invite their own staff and reassign unused seats. That purchase flow needs custom WooCommerce and enrollment code.

Assessment-led certification

A certification body scores exams with weighted sections, pass rules per section and retake limits that no plugin quiz engine supports without custom work.

Plugin, extension or custom build: how we decide

Buyers often arrive convinced they need a custom LMS. Some do. Many need one plugin, configured properly, plus a few hundred lines of custom code. The difference in cost and long-term upkeep is large, so we settle that question before we quote anything.

Option 1: a standard LMS plugin

If your courses follow the usual shape (lessons, quizzes, certificates, one price per course or a membership), a plugin such as LearnDash, LifterLMS or Tutor LMS will serve you well. You get tested features, a support team and a stream of updates you do not pay us to write.

Option 2: a plugin plus custom extensions

This is where most of our custom work lands. The plugin handles courses, progress and quizzes, and we write an add-on for the part that is unique to you: a credit ledger, an approval step, a company seat manager or a report your board asks for every quarter. The add-on uses the plugin's hooks, so updates keep working.

Option 3: a custom LMS plugin

A full custom build is right when your data does not look like courses and lessons at all, for example rolling cohorts with shared deadlines, complex assessment scoring, or learning records that must live in their own tables for performance and audit. Here we design the data model first and build only what you need.

Signs you have outgrown off-the-shelf plugins

  • Staff export CSVs every week and rebuild the same report in a spreadsheet.
  • You run three or four add-ons that each do half of one job, and they conflict after updates.
  • Your pricing (seats, credits, approvals) is handled manually by an admin.
  • Progress and report pages time out because everything is stored as post meta.
  • A previous developer edited plugin files directly, and now you cannot update.

What every custom build includes

Whichever route you take, the engineering basics stay the same. Code lives in Git and follows WordPress coding standards. Database changes ship as versioned migrations. Security checks (nonces, capabilities, escaping and prepared queries) are reviewed before each release. You get a staging site, milestone demos, documentation and full ownership of the code, all under an NDA.

A dedicated project manager keeps the scope honest. If something in the build turns out to be cheaper as a plugin setting than as code, we tell you and adjust the plan.

Moving existing learners across

New systems rarely start empty. We migrate users, enrollments, progress, quiz attempts and certificates from your current plugin, or from platforms such as Moodle, Teachable and Thinkific, with test imports and count checks before the live switch. If you would rather add an engineer to your own team for this work, see hire a WordPress LMS developer. Not sure WordPress is the right base at all? Our custom LMS development guide compares the routes.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should I use an LMS plugin or build a custom LMS on WordPress?
Start with a plugin unless your core rules clash with how plugins model courses, enrollments or reporting. Plugins bring years of tested features and cheaper upkeep. Custom code makes sense when you are paying for workarounds every month, or when your business model (credits, seats, approvals) is the product itself.
Can you extend LearnDash or LifterLMS instead of building from scratch?
Yes, and it is often the best value. Both plugins expose actions, filters and REST endpoints, so a custom add-on can change completion rules, reporting or enrollment without forking the plugin.
How much does a custom WordPress LMS cost?
It depends on how many custom rules, screens and integrations you need, so we quote after a free consultation. An add-on for an existing plugin costs far less than a full custom LMS, and our options report prices both side by side.
How long does a custom LMS build take?
A focused add-on can be delivered in weeks, while a full custom LMS usually takes months. The milestones and dates are fixed in your quote, and we guarantee on-time delivery against them.
Who owns the code, and can another developer maintain it?
You own all of it. We follow WordPress coding standards, keep everything in Git and deliver documentation, so your own team or another agency can take over.
Can you migrate our existing courses and learner records?
Yes. We map users, enrollments, progress, quiz attempts and certificates from your current plugin or platform, run test imports on staging and reconcile the counts before cutover. Common sources are other WordPress LMS plugins, Moodle, Teachable and Thinkific.
Will a custom LMS stay fast and secure as we grow?
It will if it is designed for growth from the start. We use custom tables where post meta would get slow, index for your reports, push heavy work into background jobs and apply WordPress security practices to every form and endpoint.
When is WordPress the wrong base for our LMS?
If you need proctored exams, SSO with SCIM provisioning or audit-ready compliance records, a dedicated LMS is usually a better fit than custom WordPress code. We will tell you so, and our own platform, LMS Advisor, is one option that imports LearnDash, LifterLMS and Tutor LMS courses.
