Native Proctored Exams

Online proctoring software that runs inside your LMS

Choose the controls each exam needs, from a simple fullscreen lock to screen sharing and speech-triggered audio clips. Every flag lands on one review screen with a timeline, so a reviewer makes the call.

At a glance

  • ID photo, webcam and face checks
  • Fullscreen lockdown
  • Screen and hardware checks
  • Session and device locks
  • Consented audio clips

Most exam teams we meet deliver the test in one system and proctor it in another, paying per attempt and piecing the evidence together when a candidate disputes a result. In LMS Advisor the Exams module and the proctoring are the same product. External candidates get a public exam link with an emailed one-time code, and your own staff can take the same exam inside the learner app.

There are over twenty proctoring settings, and we do not expect you to switch them all on. A weekly product-knowledge check might only need fullscreen lockdown. A licensing exam might add an ID photo, webcam snapshots, face monitoring, screen sharing and a device lock. The rule stays the same everywhere: the software flags, a reviewer decides.

The problem

Why remote exam results get challenged

A result with no evidence behind it

When a candidate appeals, “the system flagged you” is not an answer. You need images, timestamps and a record of what was detected and when.

Candidates who are not in your LMS

Job applicants and outside certification candidates have no accounts, and creating them by hand before every sitting does not scale.

False alarms that anger honest people

A dropped Wi-Fi connection or a glance at the window should not end someone’s exam without a human looking at it first.

Another vendor for every attempt

A separate proctoring service means one more contract, one more integration and a charge for each candidate.

Capabilities

Controls you switch on exam by exam

Proctoring settings sit on each exam’s settings tab. Start with lockdown and add controls as the stakes go up.

ID photo, webcam and face checks

Capture an ID photo before the start and webcam snapshots at an interval you set. On-device face detection logs no face, extra faces or looking away.

Fullscreen lockdown

Fullscreen is enforced, right-click, copy, paste and printing are blocked and logged, and tab switches are detected and recorded.

Screen and hardware checks

Require a full screen share with periodic frames, stop extended displays and virtual cameras such as OBS at the gate, and flag virtual machines.

Session and device locks

Allow one live player per attempt, compare the device fingerprint and IP on every heartbeat, and record connection gaps.

Consented audio clips

After a separate audio consent, speech triggers short clips that can be transcribed and reviewed by AI as advisory flags only.

Behavior signals

Idle time, text pasted into answers and answers given implausibly fast are recorded per question for the reviewer.

In depth

How a proctored attempt is set up and reviewed

Who can sit the exam

Each exam has a display setting. External exams get a public link where candidates register or sign in after verifying their email with a 6-digit code. Internal exams appear in the learner app for existing accounts only. You can invite candidates in batches, schedule invitations a set number of days out, and add eligibility rules, such as “scored 70% or more on the Level 1 exam” or “member of the Night Shift group”, with your own message for anyone who does not qualify.

What happens before Begin

The setup steps depend on what you switched on: a camera check, an ID photo, a screen-share prompt, the honesty pledge in your wording or ours, and, when audio recording is on, a separate consent box that names audio specifically. A candidate with an extended display or a virtual camera cannot start until they fix it. Screening questions can come first and stay out of the score.

How violations add up

Each violation is logged with a severity from 1 (a glance away) to 5 (a virtual camera, a virtual machine or a second session). The severities add up to the attempt’s risk score, which is a hint for review order, not a verdict. The violation limit counts violations and auto-submits the attempt when reached. It defaults to 3, and 0 means never. Heartbeat gaps, pledge acceptance, environment checks and screen-share starts and stops go on a separate integrity timeline, so an unstable home connection never counts toward the limit.

What reviewers see

The attempt screen shows the ID photo, camera snapshots and screen frames in separate strips, the violation list with severities, the integrity timeline, per-question timing with fast answers flagged, and any audio clips with transcripts. AI audio review writes advisory flags (a second voice, an answer being dictated, a question read aloud, a phone call) with the quoted excerpt it relied on. Those flags never change the violation count or risk score.

Limits worth knowing

Detection runs in the candidate’s browser and is best-effort. A determined cheater with a second laptop out of camera view is a problem for any remote proctoring, ours included, so treat the output as evidence for a human judgment. Audio clips are about 20 seconds each, captured only when speech is detected, with a cap per attempt (40 by default). Snapshots and audio are the most sensitive data you will hold, so set short retention periods for both.

Workflow

From exam draft to published result

Build the exam

Pull questions from the Question Bank, then set the time limit, pass mark, attempts and what candidates see on the result page.

Choose proctoring controls

Start with lockdown, then add camera, ID photo, screen share, device lock or audio to match the stakes.

Set access and invite

Pick external or internal display, add eligibility rules, and send invitations now or on a delay.

Candidates sit the exam

Setup checks run first, then the timed exam starts. Candidates can report a problem from any stage and get a reply.

Review and certify

Work through attempts by risk score, check the evidence, then publish results and issue exam certificates.

Use cases

Who proctors exams with LMS Advisor

Professional certification bodies

An installer certification body runs its final exam on an external link with ID photo and face monitoring, and issues a certificate with a public verification page to those who pass.

Pre-employment skills tests

Recruiters invite applicants to a timed test that opens with screening questions and includes a coding task graded against hidden test cases.

Internal licensing and sign-off

A bank’s compliance team runs its annual exam in the learner app, open only to staff who completed the refresher course, with device lock and single-session control.

Mock and final exams

A training provider keeps mock exams light, with lockdown only and full results shown, and saves webcam, screen sharing and a score-only result for the final.

Benefits

What your exam team gets

  • Exam delivery and proctoring in one system and one contract
  • Evidence a reviewer can explain to an appealing candidate
  • Supervision matched to the stakes of each exam
  • Connection problems kept apart from cheating signals
  • Outside candidates tested without creating accounts by hand
FAQ

Proctoring questions we get asked

Do candidates need an LMS account or a course enrollment?
No. External exams have a public link where candidates register and verify their email with a one-time code. Internal exams are for existing accounts and appear in the learner app.
Does the software disqualify candidates automatically?
Only if you set a violation limit. When the number of violations reaches it, the attempt is auto-submitted. Set the limit to 0 and nothing ends early, and every violation is kept for review.
Is face monitoring sent to a third-party service?
No. Face detection runs on the candidate’s device in the browser and logs no-face, multiple-face and looking-away events, with snapshots stored on your LMS for the reviewer.
Do you record audio for the whole exam?
No. With microphone monitoring and audio recording both on, the player saves short clips only when it detects speech, and only after the candidate accepts a separate audio consent. A quiet candidate produces no audio files at all.
Can a candidate still cheat with a phone or a second computer?
Remote proctoring cannot rule that out. Snapshots, face checks, device lock and single-session control make it harder and leave evidence, but a person should review flagged attempts before acting on them.
Can we test coding skills?
Yes. Coding questions run the candidate’s code against sample and hidden test cases through Judge0 or Piston, hosted or self-hosted. You set the allowed languages, starter code and time limit per run.
How long is proctoring evidence kept?
As long as you decide. Data retention settings delete proctoring snapshots and exam audio after the number of days you set, files included. We suggest a shorter window for audio than for images.
