Setting up a proctored final through LTI
Register the tool once
Campus IT adds LMS Advisor as an LTI 1.3 tool. The admin screen lists the values to paste into a Canvas developer key, a Moodle external tool, Blackboard’s LTI tool providers or D2L, and you copy the platform’s issuer and client ID back. After that, faculty do not need IT. With deep linking they add the tool to a module and choose the exact exam or lesson from a list.
Build the exam from a shared bank
Most departments keep one question bank per course. Tag items by topic and difficulty, then have the exam show a set number of questions with shuffled order and options, so students sitting side by side get different papers. Mix LaTeX items for derivations, a coding question with hidden test cases, an image hotspot on a diagram, or an essay the instructor marks by hand. Negative marking is there if your department uses it. AI can draft questions from a topic you give it, but every draft waits for a person to approve it.
Match proctoring to the stakes
A weekly quiz might need nothing. A midterm might use fullscreen lockdown and tab-switch logging. A heavily weighted final might add webcam snapshots, AI face monitoring for no face or a second face, an ID photo at the start and an honesty pledge the student must accept. The violation limit decides whether repeated violations are only logged or end the attempt. Tell students the exact settings in advance and run a practice quiz with the same controls, so nobody meets the fullscreen prompt for the first time during the final.
Review, then release
After the window closes, the results screen lists each attempt with its violation log and snapshots. An instructor can review a flagged attempt, reset it for a student with a documented problem, and choose when results become visible. Scores flow back to the campus gradebook through LTI. Resets and deleted attempts are written to the audit log, which helps when an academic integrity case reaches a hearing.
Accommodations
Time limits are set per exam. Students with extra-time accommodations are usually handled with a separate version of the exam that draws on the same bank with a longer limit, invited separately.
