Most colleges already have a campus LMS, and nobody wants to replace it mid-year. The pain usually sits somewhere narrower: a department that needs proctored finals, a computer science program that wants code actually executed, a language faculty that wants to hear students speak, or a continuing education office running its own short courses.

Setting up a proctored final through LTI
Register the tool once
Campus IT adds LMS Advisor as an LTI 1.3 tool. The admin screen lists the values to paste into a Canvas developer key, a Moodle external tool, Blackboard’s LTI tool providers or D2L, and you copy the platform’s issuer and client ID back. After that, faculty do not need IT. With deep linking they add the tool to a module and choose the exact exam or lesson from a list.
Build the exam from a shared bank
Most departments keep one question bank per course. Tag items by topic and difficulty, then have the exam show a set number of questions with shuffled order and options, so students sitting side by side get different papers. Mix LaTeX items for derivations, a coding question with hidden test cases, an image hotspot on a diagram, or an essay the instructor marks by hand. Negative marking is there if your department uses it. AI can draft questions from a topic you give it, but every draft waits for a person to approve it.
Match proctoring to the stakes
A weekly quiz might need nothing. A midterm might use fullscreen lockdown and tab-switch logging. A heavily weighted final might add webcam snapshots, AI face monitoring for no face or a second face, an ID photo at the start and an honesty pledge the student must accept. The violation limit decides whether repeated violations are only logged or end the attempt. Tell students the exact settings in advance and run a practice quiz with the same controls, so nobody meets the fullscreen prompt for the first time during the final.
Review, then release
After the window closes, the results screen lists each attempt with its violation log and snapshots. An instructor can review a flagged attempt, reset it for a student with a documented problem, and choose when results become visible. Scores flow back to the campus gradebook through LTI. Resets and deleted attempts are written to the audit log, which helps when an academic integrity case reaches a hearing.
Accommodations
Time limits are set per exam. Students with extra-time accommodations are usually handled with a separate version of the exam that draws on the same bank with a longer limit, invited separately.

Questions from faculty, registrars and campus IT
Does it work with Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard and D2L?
Yes, through LTI 1.3. LMS Advisor acts as the tool, supports deep linking so faculty can pick a specific exam or lesson, and passes scores back to the platform’s gradebook.
Is LMS Advisor FERPA compliant?
We do not claim any certification or attestation under FERPA or other student privacy laws. We provide the controls your privacy office will ask about: role-based access, audit logs, retention periods for proctoring images and audio, a data request queue and the option to host the platform yourself.
Do students need to install proctoring software?
No. Proctoring runs in the browser once the student grants camera access (and microphone access, if enabled). Virtual machine detection and external monitor checks cover common workarounds.
What if a student loses connection during an exam?
Heartbeat monitoring records the gap, and the student can report the problem from inside the exam. The instructor sees both on the attempt and can reset it if a retake is fair.
Can we write math notation in questions?
Yes. LaTeX renders in lessons, quiz questions and exams. The renderer loads only on pages that contain math.
Can we move courses over from Moodle?
Yes. Upload a Moodle .mbz course backup to import its structure and content. SCORM 1.2 and 2004, xAPI and cmi5 packages also upload as lessons.
Is the student interface available in other languages?
Yes. The interface ships in English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Swedish, Hindi and Urdu, and individual courses and lessons can carry their own translations.
Can AI grade written work?
AI can propose a score and feedback on assignments using the rubric you wrote, and the instructor approves or changes it before it counts. AI can be switched off for the whole institution or feature by feature.
