Sensei LMS courses your team can edit in the block editor

Sensei works differently, and that is the point

Most WordPress LMS plugins grew up with shortcodes and page builders. Sensei LMS, from Automattic, went the other way and put everything in the block editor. Courses are assembled from blocks such as Course Outline, Course Actions, Lesson Actions and Quiz, and the Conditional Content block shows different messages to enrolled and non-enrolled visitors. For your content team that means one editor for the whole site. For a developer it means customization happens through blocks, patterns and templates, which is how we approach every Sensei project.

Designing the learner experience

Learning Mode strips away the regular site header, sidebar and footer and gives learners a focused lesson view with the lesson list down the side. You can style it with the free Course Theme, a block theme made for Sensei, or customize its templates in the Site Editor of your own block theme. We design those templates to match your brand, then build a library of patterns for course landing pages, lesson intros and module summaries. Authors insert a pattern, replace the text and publish.

Sensei Pro adds the interactive blocks that make lessons feel less like reading. We use them where they serve the material:

• Interactive Video with questions that pause playback at set points
• Image Hotspot for labeled diagrams, product screens or equipment photos
• Flashcard for terminology and quick recall
• Tasklist for practical exercises learners tick off
• Accordion and the glossary for reference material inside a lesson

Video can come from YouTube, Vimeo or VideoPress. Quizzes support multiple choice, true or false, fill in the blank, free response and file uploads, and Sensei Pro adds ordering questions and a timer.

Selling through WooCommerce

Sensei does not have its own checkout. Sensei Pro connects each course to one or more WooCommerce products, which is a strength if you already run a store and a new thing to learn if you do not. We set up simple and variable subscription products, trial periods and sign-up fees, and connect WooCommerce Memberships when access should follow a plan. We also plan for the known gaps. Subscription switching is not supported for Sensei courses, so if you want learners to upgrade tiers we design that flow deliberately rather than discover the problem after launch.

Groups, cohorts and schedules

For training providers and schools, Sensei Pro's groups and cohorts decide who sees what and when. Combined with drip lessons, course scheduling and required content, you can run a spring intake that opens module two only after week one. We add the reporting and enrollment automation around it so admins are not adding learners by hand.

Migrating and extending

Sensei's importer at Sensei LMS, Tools, Import Content reads UTF-8 CSV files for courses, lessons and questions. We clean and map your source data into those files, pre-load media, and script the parts it does not cover. Sensei is open source on GitHub with REST API support and hooks throughout, and it runs on WordPress Multisite, so custom integrations are straightforward to build and maintain.
