LMS Advisor vs Skilljar: which one fits your training?
Skilljar, a Gainsight company, is an external LMS for customer and partner education with academies, checkout and CRM connectors. LMS Advisor trains customers, partners and employees from one product with native proctored exams and a server you own. Checked against Skilljar’s own pages in October 2026.
Our honest take
Pick Skilljar if customer education is the whole job, you live in Salesforce or Gainsight, and you want built-in checkout with Credly badges and a SOC 2 vendor. Pick LMS Advisor if you also train employees and run proctored or certification exams natively, need native mobile apps, examine candidates outside any course, or want to self-host on a one-time license.
Skilljar is built for one job: customer education. Branded academy sites, catalog pages, certifications with Credly badges, built-in checkout, and native connectors to Salesforce, Gainsight, Marketo and Intercom make it a natural fit for a software company that wants training inside its customer lifecycle. Proctoring comes through partners such as ProctorFree, and the product runs in Skilljar’s US-hosted cloud.
LMS Advisor covers the same customer academy use case, with token single sign-on from your product, a branded AI Tutor and courses sold through WooCommerce, and adds what Skilljar’s pages do not: native proctoring on every exam, a Test Center for candidates outside any course, iOS and Android apps, and self-hosting with a one-time license. Below is where each product wins, with every Skilljar fact taken from Skilljar’s own site and help center.

Choosing between the two
LMS Advisor is the better fit if
- You run certification exams that need proctoring in the product, not a partner contract, with ID capture and an evidence trail kept in the same place.
- You train employees as well as customers and want one LMS with branches, organizations and SCIM provisioning.
- Your learners need iOS and Android apps with offline lessons, or you examine candidates who never enroll in a course.
- You want the LMS on your own server, in your own country, with a one-time license instead of a subscription.
Skilljar is the better fit if
- Customer education is the whole job and your team lives in Salesforce, Gainsight, Marketo or Intercom.
- You want checkout, promo codes and license packages inside the LMS, with Credly badges on completion.
- Your security review requires a SOC 2 vendor and you are happy with US-only data processing.
Where the two really differ
Six differences come up in nearly every Skilljar conversation. Checkout, CRM connectors and customer-success tooling favor Skilljar. Exams, mobile apps and hosting favor LMS Advisor.
Proctoring in the product, or through a partner
Skilljar connects to ProctorFree for recorded and audited exams with photo and optional ID capture, and lists Examity, Caveon, Kryterion, PSI and Talview. LMS Advisor’s webcam snapshots, AI face checks, fullscreen lockdown, ID photo capture and violation limits are settings on each exam, with no second contract.
Customer education, with employees too
Skilljar is an external LMS: academies, catalog pages and CRM connectors for customers and partners. LMS Advisor trains customers through token SSO from your product and a branded AI Tutor, and trains employees from the same install with branches, organizations, SCIM and HR sync.
Native apps against responsive web
Skilljar runs in a browser and states no native apps, offline access or push. LMS Advisor has iOS and Android apps that keep video, audio and document lessons offline, with an optional app under your own brand.
Checkout and CRM go to Skilljar
Skilljar sells courses, paths and plans with Stripe or PayPal, promo codes and license packages, and pushes training data into Salesforce, Gainsight and Marketo. LMS Advisor sells through WooCommerce and syncs HubSpot and Zoho CRM, with webhooks and the API for the rest.
An AI Tutor for every lesson
Skilljar’s AI Tutor is in beta and does not cover SCORM or web package lessons. LMS Advisor’s tutor carries your name and avatar and answers from lesson text, captions and notes, with an admin log of conversations, and AI can be switched off.
US cloud against your own server
Skilljar processes data in the United States only. LMS Advisor runs in our cloud or installs on ordinary cPanel or VPS hosting in any country, which matters for EU, UK, Indian or Australian customers with residency rules.
The details that decide a Skilljar comparison
Built for customers, or for every audience
Skilljar’s structure runs from organization to training domains, catalog pages, courses and lessons, with one to three academy sites depending on plan, groups with auto-enrollment rules and 14 dashboard roles. Everything points outward: SSO from your product by OAuth, SAML or token, Credly badges, Salesforce and Gainsight connectors, Marketo and Intercom, and built-in checkout with Stripe or PayPal. For a software company whose customer success team owns training, that is a coherent product.
LMS Advisor serves the same customer academy with token SSO from your product, a public help center, a branded AI Tutor and courses sold through WooCommerce, and it serves employees and partners from the same install: branches, organizations with their own sign-in page, SCIM provisioning, HR sync and manager views. If you want one LMS for customers and staff, that is the difference.
Exams and proctoring
Skilljar’s quiz has six question types, unlimited question banks with random draw, randomized order, a passing score, attempt limits, a time limit and manual grading through tasks. Proctoring comes through partners: ProctorFree records and audits the exam with photo and optional ID capture, and Examity, Caveon, Kryterion, PSI and Talview are listed as integrations. That works, at the cost of a second vendor and a second contract.
LMS Advisor’s question bank has 14 types including coding questions that run against test cases, image hotspot, audio and video answers, with pools, difficulty levels, negative marking and nightly item analysis. Proctoring is configured per exam: periodic webcam snapshots, AI face monitoring, fullscreen lockdown, logged tab switches and copy or paste, ID photo capture, device lock and violation limits that can end an attempt. The Test Center examines candidates who are not enrolled anywhere, with an appeal step and a results page you control.
Standards, mobile and AI
Both products run SCORM 1.2 and 2004 and cmi5. Skilljar takes xAPI only as cmi5 packages and SCORM without sequencing rules, acts as an LTI 1.3 consumer, and exports courses as cmi5 for syndication to other LMSs, a feature we do not have. LMS Advisor keeps xAPI statements in a built-in LRS and acts as an LTI 1.3 tool with grade passback, the opposite role.
Skilljar is a mobile-responsive web application and states no native apps. LMS Advisor has iOS and Android apps with offline video, audio and documents and an optional branded app. Skilljar AI generates descriptions, objectives and quiz questions, and its AI Tutor is in beta for HTML, video and audio lessons. LMS Advisor’s AI drafts courses, lessons and questions, grades with suggestions, captions and translates video, and its tutor covers every lesson type, with the provider chosen by you or switched off.
Pricing, hosting and certification
Skilljar quotes three annual plans, Essentials, Professional and Enterprise, plus an active-user fee, and lists add-ons at $10,000 for content syndication, from $25,000 for the data connector and from $10,000 for five language packs (October 2026). It runs on AWS, processes data in the United States only, and completes a SOC 2 Type II audit each year.
LMS Advisor is quote-based on learner numbers, modules and hosting. The cloud is a subscription; a standard self-hosted install on ordinary cPanel or VPS hosting, in any country, can be bought on a one-time license. We hold no attestation and will say so on your questionnaire.
Moving from Skilljar to LMS Advisor
Export what you own
Download your SCORM and cmi5 packages, videos and PDFs, and export student, enrollment, quiz and order reports to CSV from Skilljar’s analytics before the plan ends.
Upload content as lessons
In LMS Advisor, create courses and upload SCORM, xAPI and cmi5 packages, videos and documents as lessons. Text lessons and quizzes are rebuilt in the browser editor and question bank, with AI drafts to speed that up.
Connect your product and CRM
Switch learner sign-in to token SSO from your application, map Skilljar groups to organizations, and point webhooks or the HubSpot and Zoho CRM sync at your systems. Salesforce and Gainsight take events through webhooks and the API.
Rebuild exams, store and go live
Set up proctored certification exams in the Test Center, connect WooCommerce for paid courses, reissue current certificates with their expiry dates, and point customers at the new academy before you close the Skilljar domain.
