LMS Advisor vs LifterLMS: selling courses or proving skills?

Two different business models

LifterLMS is built for people who sell learning: coaches, creators and training companies with a public audience. Its features page gives as much room to checkout, access plans, payment plans, coupons, gifting and memberships as to teaching, and the free core lets you launch before spending anything on software.

LMS Advisor is aimed at the organization that has to prove training happened: a compliance manager with an audit coming, a certification body issuing credentials, an L&D team onboarding hundreds of hires. The money side is thin by design, with no checkout, coupons or memberships. If you sell, it happens in WooCommerce, with our plugin handling enrollment and sign-in.

Course building and progression

The course outlines look alike. LifterLMS groups lessons into sections in a drag-and-drop builder and attaches a quiz or assignment to a lesson. LMS Advisor also uses sections and ordered lessons, but a lesson can itself be an interactive module (tabs, flip cards, drag-and-drop, scored knowledge checks), a video with timestamped questions, a SCORM package or a live session.

On progression, LifterLMS has the edge in one area. It lists lesson and course prerequisites, course tracks and cohorts. LMS Advisor offers drip by days after enrollment, sequential progression, minimum lesson time and required blocks, but not course prerequisites. Since LifterLMS 10.1.0, both products can enforce a minimum time on lessons.

Quizzes, question banks and exams

In the free core, LifterLMS quizzes use four auto-graded question types: single and multiple correct multiple choice, picture multiple choice and true/false. The Advanced Quizzes add-on, sold on its own or in the Infinity bundle, adds fill in the blank, reorder items and pictures, short and long answer, upload, code and scale, plus question banks, time limits, attempt limits and manual grading.

LMS Advisor’s question bank ships with 13 types and no add-on. The coding type runs a candidate’s answer against test drivers through Judge0 or Piston, hosted or self-hosted, and others include image hotspot and audio or video answers. Exams live in their own module with a candidate portal, so a job applicant or an external candidate can take a test from an email invite without being enrolled in a course. Each exam then decides its own proctoring: webcam snapshots, AI face monitoring, fullscreen lockdown, tab-switch and copy/paste logging, ID photo capture, device lock and optional microphone monitoring with consent. The result is an evidence trail a reviewer can open when a candidate challenges a score. We did not find proctoring on the LifterLMS features page.

Standards and integrations

LifterLMS answers the SCORM question in its docs by pointing to Experience API for LifterLMS, a third-party integration, and its features page lists Tin Can (xAPI) as an integration. LMS Advisor handles SCORM 1.2 and 2004, xAPI and cmi5 packages natively, stores xAPI statements in a built-in LRS while packages run, and can forward them to an external LRS. It also acts as an LTI 1.3 tool, which matters if a university or partner platform wants to launch your courses from its own LMS.

Clients, roles and sign-in

LifterLMS offers manager, instructor, instructor’s assistant and student roles, with Groups as an advanced add-on. That suits a school selling to individuals. Selling to companies is different: their IT team will ask how staff sign in and how leavers lose access. LMS Advisor supports SAML 2.0 SSO and SCIM 2.0 provisioning, organizes learners into branches, organizations and groups with manager views, and assigns courses with due dates and overdue reports.

What it costs to run

LifterLMS keeps the entry cost low: a free core, then yearly bundles that add sites and add-ons, with renewals at full price. Your WordPress hosting and any third-party plugins are separate. LMS Advisor pricing is quoted per deployment, based on cloud or self-hosted, learner numbers and the modules you choose. When you compare, line up the whole stack on each side: hosting, bundles, a third-party SCORM integration and whatever you would add for exam security.
